a brief introduction

What is astrocartography?

When you were born, every planet occupied a specific position in the sky. Astrocartography — developed by Jim Lewis in 1978 — takes those positions and maps them onto the Earth.

The result is a world map covered in colored lines. Each line shows where a specific planet's energy is strongest for you.

how it works

At your birth moment, each planet was either rising, setting, at its highest point, or at its lowest point somewhere on Earth. Astrocartography calculates those exact locations and draws lines through them.

These lines curve across the globe. When you live near one, travel to one, or even work remotely with people on one — that planet's energy activates in the corresponding area of your life.

the four angles

MC — Midheaven

Your career and public life. Where the planet was at its highest point in the sky. How the world sees you professionally.

IC — Imum Coeli

Your home and inner world. The lowest point. Where you put down roots, build family, and find emotional peace.

AC — Ascendant

Your identity and presence. The rising point. How you show up, your energy, your first impression.

DC — Descendant

Your relationships. The setting point. Who you attract — partners, friends, collaborators.

the orb

You don't have to live directly on a line to feel it. Astrocartography works within an orb of about 300-400 miles. The closer you are, the stronger the energy.

crossing points & power spots

The most significant places on your map are where multiple lines converge on the same city. These crossing points create a blend of planetary energies that's greater than the sum of its parts.

For example, if your Venus DC line and Jupiter MC line both pass through Barcelona, that city carries a double charge — attracting meaningful relationships and expanding your career at the same time. Astrocartographers call these power spots.

Even when lines don't perfectly intersect, nearby passes still matter. A city sitting 50km from your Sun line will feel noticeably different from one 300km away. Our tool calculates these distances precisely and ranks your strongest connections automatically — so you can see at a glance which cities hold the most energy for you.

Common power spot combinations:

  • Venus + Jupiter — abundance in love and opportunity, the "lucky in love" spot
  • Sun + Mercury — your voice and identity align, great for writers and speakers
  • Moon + Venus — deep emotional comfort with beauty and harmony
  • Mars + Jupiter — ambitious drive meets expansion, a career accelerator
  • Sun + Jupiter — confidence and growth, where you feel largest and most capable

caution zones

Not every planetary line brings ease. In traditional astrology, some planets carry heavier energy — and their lines on your map reflect that.

Saturn lines bring restriction, delays, and hard lessons — but also discipline and lasting achievement. Pluto lines force deep, sometimes painful transformation. Neptune lines blur boundaries and can lead to confusion or escapism. Mars lines amp up aggression and conflict.

When a city sits on one of these lines — and only these lines, without a gentler planet like Venus or Jupiter nearby to soften things — it becomes what we call a caution zone. These aren't places you're forbidden from visiting. They're places where you'll be tested, where growth comes through challenge rather than comfort.

Our chart automatically identifies your caution zones alongside your power spots, so you get the full picture — not just the flattering parts.

about this site

Most astrocartography resources bury the meaning in jargon or give you vague, unhelpful descriptions. We built this guide to be different.

Every planetary line is explained in plain English with real-life examples of what you'd actually experience. No astrology degree required.

Astrocartography is a lens for understanding your relationship with place. Use it alongside your own intuition and practical judgment. The stars suggest — they don't command.
